On a beautiful Saturday morning recently (May 17), a crew of five Madres members helped out at a truly inspiring community event: the 2025 Challenger Jamboree hosted by South Bay Little League in Chula Vista. The event brought in over 200 differently-abled athletes from both sides of the border. Families traveled from Mexicali, Tijuana, the Imperial Valley, and throughout San Diego to watch their kids play ball, enjoy carnival games, and go home with trophies, prizes, and memories that will last forever.
The jamboree was special because ordinarily the Challenger athletes play only a few of the same teams in their season. But this event brought in 19 different teams, and all four fields were buzzing with baseball!
The Madres were put in charge of the Carnival Games area. There was cornhole, disc drop, pop-a-shot basketball, and axe tossing (everything rubberized!). After the kids played a game, they got to choose from buckets of prizes including miniature dinosaurs, bubble wands, yo-yo’s, and balloons. There was never a dull moment for the Madres in our area, and we managed to keep the kids safe and happy!
Many thanks to Youth Baseball Coordinator Debra Bralla for coordinating our participation and the other Madres volunteers: Michelle Frost Sarah Bellows, Benita Werntz, and Marilyn Rutland.
Please consider joining or donating to the Madres (see our Donations link) so that we can continue to provide assistance to kids of all abilities who love playing ball!
